Medication to Delay Periods
16th November 2025
Our practice will no longer prescribe norethisterone or similar medication on the NHS to delay periods for non-medical reasons.
Why has this changed?
Norethisterone can be used to delay a period, but this is considered a non-medical (lifestyle) use — for example, to avoid a period during holidays, travel, weddings, or sporting events.
NHS England guidance asks prescribers to ensure that medicines are used only for clinically appropriate and evidence-based reasons, in order to make fair and responsible use of NHS resources.
When it can be prescribed
Norethisterone and other hormonal medicines may still be prescribed on the NHS when clinically appropriate, for example:
- Heavy or painful periods (menorrhagia or dysmenorrhoea)
- Endometriosis or other gynaecological conditions
- As advised by a hospital specialist
What if I still want to delay my period?
If you wish to delay your period for non-medical reasons, you can:
- Access this medication privately through a registered online pharmacy or travel clinic.
- Seek advice from your local pharmacist about safe and appropriate options.
